Transportation, Utilities, and Aviation
Commerce is the lifeblood of the economy and has been a large part of Jones & Keller’s practice for over sixty years. Our attorneys have earned a national reputation representing both carriers and shippers and in dealing with the complex and still intensive governmental regulation that survives widespread deregulation in the industry.
Jones & Keller attorneys have an equally longstanding presence and expertise in the field of public utilities. We represent both public utilities and major industrial consumers of utility services. Our attorneys advise clients in all aspects of public utility law and represent them in both federal and state regulatory proceedings.
Rail and Motor Carriers
The nation’s ever-evolving, fast-paced transportation logistics marketplace is constantly providing new challenges to both providers and users of transportation services. Jones & Keller has longstanding experience in representing rail and motor carriers, property brokers, freight forwarders, logistics companies and other transportation service providers, as well as major users of these transportation services, in all of the many aspects of this important segment of commerce, including licensing, mergers and acquisitions, financing, rates and contracts for service, regulatory compliance, rail abandonment and discontinuance of service proceedings, and the arbitration and litigation of complex cargo loss and damage claims and other disputes.
Jones & Keller lawyers rank among the nation’s leading attorneys in the field and are abreast of the ever changing laws and regulations that govern the transportation industry and affect commercial relations between carriers, shippers, consignees, and members of the public. We continue to assist out clients in navigating the complex transportation landscape and, where appropriate, in the transition to a de-regulated environment. The firm has had substantial experience in both state and federal courts and before state public utilities commissions in representing transportation providers and major shippers in this complex and important area of the law.
Public Utilities
Jones & Keller lawyers represent both public utilities and major industrial customers of utilities in matters relating to electric power, natural gas, pipelines, telecommunications, and water service, including construction of facilities, rates and service contracts, rulemaking proceedings, and complaints and litigation arising in connections with these activities. Jones & Keller lawyers have extensive experience in these fields of law and have been involved in numerous landmark cases before regulatory commissions and in the courts.
Public utilities not only provide essential services and commodities, but their policies and business decisions have profound economic and societal impacts. Jones & Keller attorneys have broad experience in dealing with these matters and can assist their clients in resolving the myriad of issues that arise in this important area of the law.
Aviation
Jones & Keller attorneys represent pilots, aircraft owners and businesses in a variety of aviation regulation and enforcement matters including the defense of certificate enforcement and civil penalty actions before the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board, and advising on regulatory compliance. We also conduct aircraft and airport-related commercial litigation, including claims arising from breach of aircraft purchase contracts and airport lease agreements and the negotiation of aircraft purchases.
We also offer transactional and regulatory support to owners, operators and financiers of aircraft, including negotiation and documentation of aircraft purchases, tax planning (including tax-deferred exchanges) and fractional ownership.
